Alpha decay is a type of radioactive decay in which an atomic nucleus emits an alpha particle (two protons and two neutrons) and thereby transforms (or 'decays') into an atom with a mass number 4 less and atomic number 2 less. As for astronomy, the situation is different since it has no Nobel Prizes of its own; it has therefore been natural from the start, to consider discoveries in astrophysics as possible candidates for Prizes in Physics. The particles aren’t actually coloured (for one thing they’re much smaller than the wavelength of visible light).
