Strong Shoulders

By

If you grapple as part of your sport (rugby, wrestling, judo MMA) then add this into your conditioning sessions. I showed this clip at a shoulder conference full of physio's and surgeons and once they had uncovered their eyes they loved it – if your sport requires a strong and stable shoulder complex then you need to train it!

Hi Nick
I grapple, I have been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for around 3 years. Never tried this exercise but will be adding into workouts from now on.
What sort of weight/time/reps should be done for this?
Thanks
Gaz

Gaz,

I usually go for a 10-15kg plate but you can go lighter if necessary. Not sure you need to go much higher in terms of load. I usually work between 10-15 reps each way or for time 30s. Always difficult to say regarding programming as it always depends on the client.

If you like that exercise search the site for ‘brazillians’ – great warm up for the shoulder complex.

Hi Nick
I put them into a shoulder workout last Friday, completely ruined my shoulders :)
Dead on with the weight, I used a 15kg plate and did 10 reps in each direction for 3 sets as part of a super set with fat grip upright rows.
I will keep using them and let you know if I notice a difference. I have searched for that warm up video but I can't find it??

Thanks

When you say ‘ruined’ I’m assuming you mean that in a good way!

haha yes, ruined in a good way. I haven't had a shoulder workout that good in quite a while!
I have since recommended them to a couple of people I know and they have said the same.

Thanks Nick :)
